The current, accelerating European and global debate on quality of life indicators is of crucial importance for the conservation goals of BirdLife International.
It relies on the national bird and IBA monitoring schemes of BirdLife Partners, and, for widespread birds, also of the European Bird Census Council.
So bird indicators are set to become among our most powerful tools for driving changes in policies and practices to help birds and other biodiversity.

MINIATURE - LoveToKnow Article on MINIATURE
In the best Flemish miniatures of the period the artist succeeds in presenting a wonderful softness and glow of color; nor did the high standard cease with the 15th century, for many excellent specimens still remain to attest the favor in which it was held for a few decades longer.
Here there is more freedom; and we trace the debased classical style which copies Roman, as distinguished from Byzantine, models.
Such indications, too, of landscape as are to be found are of the classical type, not conventional in the sense of medieval conventionalism, but still attempting to follow nature, even if in an imperfect fashion; just as in the Pompeian and other frescoes of the Roman age.

 European Shorthair CCA Breed Standard
GENERAL: The European Shorthair (also called "European" or "Europé") originates from populations of barn cats and strays in different countries of Europe.
The Chartreux, the British Shorthair and even the American Shorthair were developed from the ESH, and they are now more popular than the original breed.
Nowadays ESHs are mostly bred in Sweden and Finland (and they are fairly popular there), although some breeders can be found in other countries as well.

1996) show that gila and red-bellied woodpecker population numbers have been maintained at relatively low numbers in Arizona and Tennessee compared to the increasingly abundant European starling since 1980.
Many exotic bird species were first introduced in the mid-to-late nineteenth century by European immigrants intending to improve their new surroundings with familiar European birds.
The growing dominance of introduced bird species is seen in the increase in population sizes of such birds as rock doves, house finches, house sparrows, and European starlings (Gill 1995).

ON THE BREEDING DISTRIBUTION PATTERN OF EUROPEAN MIGRANT BIRDS: MACARTHUR'S THEME REEXAMINED
European breeding bird com- munities, as those in North America, are composed of a variable fraction of species (hereafter named "migrants") that migrate south in the autumn to spend the winter in the African tropics south of the Sahara Desert (Moreau 1952).
To explain the European pattern of PPM, I suggest that the percentage of migrants in a community during the breeding season depends on both the harshness of adverse winter conditions faced by the resident populations and on the total resource availability during the breeding period.
No apparent geographical trend was found, however, and interhabitat differences alone appeared to account for the largest part of the variation in neo- tropical migrant proportions.

So far the Brazilian Shorthair has very few breeders, and little genetic improvement.
