British coinage - encyclopedia article about British coinage.
Five Pence The British decimal Five Pence (5p) coin was issued in 1968 in preparation for the forthcoming decimalisation of the coinage.
In 1990 a smaller version weighing 3.25 grams and with a diameter of 18.00 millimetres was introduced, and all the older 5p and shilling coins were withdrawn from circulation and demonetised from 1 January 1991.
As at that time it had the same value, size, and weight as the pre-existing Shilling coin it may be viewed as a continuation of the older coin.

Modern Irish Coinage (1928 to date)
In 1982 the British coinage was augmented with a 20 pence and a pound which were not matched by similar coins in the Irish system.
The new decimal 5 pence and 10 pence coins were identical in size and of equivalent value to the previous coinage, these coins were introduced early, in 1969, and the older counterparts were not demonitised.
I believe that this coin was manufactured as one of a series of coins of similar size and weight produced by the Royal Mint to commemornate the 50th Anniversary of the UN.

Questions - Women for an Australian Republic
This is an important aspect of the two-thirds appointment model and one that has been continuously overlooked throughout the debate on the republic.
We think at this stage, the bipartisan model is more likely to produce a woman or an indigenous person as President.
This way of electing the President (called the bipartisan model) was decided at the Constitutional Convention in 1998.

To cut peat, an area of bogland is drained; the top layer containing living plants is removed; the turf is then cut using a sléan (a narrow spade with a side blade set at a right-angle), and it is laid out on the ground to dry.
25% of Ireland's electricity is generated by peat-fired power stations.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Numismatics
He furthermore enjoined greater care in minting and made regulations on this point which became the standard for the greater part of Europe, and which, in their essential features, are operative in England to the present day.
Other standards of coinage were the Phocæan, the Æginetan, the Attic, the Corinthian, the Ptolemaic, and the cistophoric standard of Asia Minor; some of these, however, may be derived from the Persian standard.
For many years gold was coined only at Byzantium, and these gold pieces served as a model, not only for the gold coinage of the West, which was not resumed until the thirteenth century, but also for that of Islam.

 FRANCIA
As neat halves of Charlemange's empire eventually formed, France in the West and Germany in the East, the stage for the greatest battles of modern war in the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries would be set along the seam, from Nieuwpoort (1600) to Ramillies (1706), Waterloo (1815), Verdun (1916), and the Bulge (1944).
The standard gold coin, the "dollar of the Middle Ages," had been the Roman solidus, which was minted without debasement from the days of Constantine until the reign of the Emperor Michael IV, in Constantinople, in the 11th century.
Nevertheless, German states, like Lombardy, had maintained a gold coinage.

Irish Coin Sets Available - Including 2000
Perhaps because of this, we have always found Irish coin sets popular with collectors.
Because Ireland is in the Euro Zone, these coin sets listed will be among the last of their type before the new "Euro" denomination coins are issued in 2002.
Ireland is also known as Eire or the Republic of Ireland, sometimes also called Southern Ireland.

 Classics Ireland 2000
No other work by Zeno, or indeed any Stoic, attracted as much attention or as much abuse as this one.
His third-century successors, Cleanthes and Chrysippus both made similar suggestions in their own writings, but as they were not the founders of the school they did not cause the same embarrassment.
Some things, such as marriage and the family, may have been abandoned because they were the cause of conflict, while others, such as lawcourts and coinage, would have been unnecessary in a harmonious society.

 Coinage Mints of Ireland
The fact that the Irish coinage didn't change a whole lot between 1928 and 2000 shows the high standard for this coinage design.
The design on the reverse of the coin depicts the historic Broighter Boat.
Percy Metcalfe's design was selected as it was very artistic and his designs were technically suited to modern coin production.

Travellers to some parts of the British Isles are sometimes perplexed by the types of paper money they find in use.
We are prepared to buy the larger British and Euro coins, at a discount, and usually have some available for sale, at a lower rate than paper money.
We usually also have the money of Scotland and Northern Ireland on hand, and are of course ready to buy it.
