money slang history, words, expressions and money slang meanings
Interestingly new 10p and 5p coins were actually introduced into circulation in 1968, three years prior to decimalisation, up until which time they were used as two shillings and one shilling coins.
Pound notes were unchanged by decimalisation, although in the late 1970's they were reduced in size, perhaps because the old ones were too beautiful, and then finally phased out and replaced by the one pound coin in the 1990's.
Interestingly modern British 'silver' coins are still copper-base and nickel coated, whereas the 'coppers' are actually now steel-base and copper coated, since to make high-copper-content low face value coins would create another opportunity for the scrap converters.

 Dozenal Journal extracts 2
Those who believe that metrication, being simple, is in some way "natural" overlook the sheer unnaturalness of that system.
As if decimalisation was not bad enough - and only some tourists actually seemed stumped by the old system -we added the abomination of metrication.
A great advantage of the old and "difficult", system was that children learnt it quickly.

 British Currency
We all still remember the rip-off days of decimalisation and the Euro conversion will be another such excuse.
So then,in the early 70's, along came decimalisation:-
After decimalisation, the new penny (100th of a Pound) was worth 2.4 old pennies (240th of a Pound), so each time something went up in price it was by a minimum of 2.4 old pennies but sounded the same.

Decimal Coins of the UK - The Change to Decimal Coinage
The older shillings and florins continued to circulate long after decimalisation until the size of the coins was reduced.
In 1968 new shillings and florins were issued as 5 new pence and 10 new pence coins.
Theoretically silver coins from 1816 could still have been found in change, but the active withdrawal of silver in the years following the change in 1947, followed by the combination of a dramatic rise in the price of silver with devaluation in 1967 meant that silver coins rapidly vanished from circulation.

 Encyclopedia: British coinage
Several of these coins have changed in size and design since first introduction.
Before decimalisation there were 240 pennies in a pound, now there are 100.
The new coins were marked with the wording "New Penny" (singular) or "New Pence" (plural) to distinguish them from the old.

Decimalisation - encyclopedia article about Decimalisation. Free access, no registration needed. What does ...
In France, decimalisation of the coinage was accompanied by metrication of other measures.
However, in general the two have not gone hand in hand: the U.S. has never metricated, Canada has only recently done so despite having long had a decimal coinage, and the U.K. has only metricated to a limited extent.
Interestingly, the face value of Maundy money was instead maintained, effectively increasing all coins' value by a factor 2.4, as the coins continue to be legal tender.

Did You Know? - Coins and Decimalisation
A new coin was introduced then - the florin, worth two shillings - which was worth one tenth of a pound.
As decimalisation approached, the half-crown was withdrawn as it had no place in the new decimal age.
Scottish coinage followed a similar development to that in England, though Scots coinage was often in short supply and of uncertain value compared with the English, Dutch, Flemish or French coin, which were preferred by the majority of Scots.

BBC News BUSINESS Wall Street decimalisation makes cents
The Nasdaq stock market will begin its own roll-out on 12 March, covering 5,000 mainly smaller companies.
At the end of September, stocks in another 52 companies, including market heavyweights like America Online, Colgate-Palmolive, Lockheed Martin, and Goodyear will join the list.
US stock markets are moving to join the rest of the world by trading stocks in cents rather than fractions of a dollar.

 Up to decimalisation
These were identical in size and weight to the shilling and the florin respectively, and were used in their place.
As part of the preparation for this, and because inflation was also taking its toll of the value, the half penny was withdrawn in 1969.

 News & Markets
Decimalisation was closely linked to Britain's attempts to join the then Common Market.
But the much-trumpeted simplicities of decimalisation, which swept away the treasured eccentricities of threepenny bits and half crowns, were in marked contrast to the complex rows and near-panic the switch caused among ministers.
The pressure to postpone decimalisation had began to build within six months of the passing of the 1967 Act ordering the changeover.

 Post decimalisation
Decimalisation happened on 15th February 1971, when the existing ‘copper’ coins were replaced with new decimal denominations.
The sixpence continued in use, with a value of 2.5 new pence.
Pictures of current or very recent notes have been intentionally defaced and some show anti-copying patterning on the reverse.

Guardian Unlimited The Guardian The day we all went decimal
Before the big coin changeover, the Tories, then in opposition, launched a Commons censure motion which "regrets the system of decimalisation of the currency."
An 18-month changeover period was allowed for, but the old currency mostly disappeared within a few weeks - although a few shops kept pounds, shillings and pence for years.
Despite well-publicised problems, decimalisation turned out to be a piece of cake.

`Decimalisation of US securities will increase Nasdaq turnover'
THE proposed decimalisation of stocks in the US securities industry as against the current practice of pricing them in fractions, such as one-sixteenth of a dollar, would only result in improved valuations and increase the turnover of exchanges like the Nasdaq, Mr Patrick Sutch, Vice-President (Asia Pacific), Nasdaq Stock Market, has said.
`Decimalisation of US securities will increase Nasdaq turnover'
``With decimalisation, we believe that there is a need to increase the capacity of the Nasdaq stock market from the current 3 billion shares per day to 8 billion shares a day in the next two-three years,'' he said.

How to get an ATM PIN in 15 guesses The Register
The attack works not by going after the PIN number directly but by manipulating the contents of the decimalisation table in order to gain clues (such as which digits are or are not present in the PIN).
The attack, documented in a paper published earlier this week, is directed against the decimalisation tables used to translate between a card PIN and the hexadecimal value of a PIN generated when the hardware security module checks the validity of a number.
By design, it shouldn't be possible to guess a four-digit pin in less than an average of 5,000 attempts.

 Encyclopedia4U - Shilling - Encyclopedia Article
It was issued until 1969, and after 1971, like Britain, the general public often used a shilling to pay 5-pences to shops, etc. When the Central Bank of Ireland issued a smaller five-pence piece, the shilling was finally demonitised in 1992
Shillings were also issued in Australia and New Zealand before decimalisation in the 1960s, in Austria (schillings) until the advent of the Euro, and in the Scandinavian countries (skilding) until the Scandinavian Monetary Union of 1873.
Shillings remain the basic currency unit of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Day Trading: decimalisation and scalping ...
Yes it will still be possible to scalp once decimals are inacted, but the spreads and therefore potential profits will be smaller.
I`ve been looking into exploiting the buy/ask spread (espescially on the NYSE) but i wonder if there will still be a chance to do that once decimalisation will replace the 1/16`s completely...

Decimalisation table attacks for PIN cracking - Bond, Zielinski (ResearchIndex)
It takes an average of 15 guesses to determine a four digit PIN using this technique, instead of the 5000 guesses intended.
Abstract: We present an attack on hardware security modules used by retail banks for the secure storage and verification of customer PINs in ATM (cash machine) infrastructures.
By using adaptive decimalisation tables and guesses, the maximum amount of information is learnt about the true PIN upon each guess.

Consistently with that country's mania for decimalisation, the French Revolutionary Calendar comprised weeks of 10 days, each day comprising 10 hours, each hour comprising 100 minutes, and each minute comprising 100 seconds.
The last concerted effort to alter the Gregorian Calendar occurred in France, following the Revolution in 1792.
