Euro leaves mark after six months - 6/24/02
Euro Collections International's Murray Church said that his company has been unable to send out its traditional mailings advertising new issues because the coins sell out so quickly that the mailings are obsolete when they reach collectors' mailboxes.
He said that a lot of new collectors have been attracted to the hobby by the euros and their chance to begin a collection at the beginning of a new currency.
While coin dealers may be experiencing excellent business with their euro offerings, a look at eBay gives a less rosy picture of the market for euros.

NiDI Status Report #6: The Colour of Money (1998)
Sweden has largely removed nickel from its coinage and, in the recent decision on the new European coinage (the Euro), Sweden argued for the total removal of nickel and nickel alloys from consideration for the new coinage.
Long before nickel was identified as an element (in 1751 by the Swedish scientist Axel Cronstedt), nickel was part of coinage: the ancient Chinese alloy 'paitung' was an coinage material of nickel, copper and zinc.
Nickel in coinage was not new even in the 1850s.

In 1965, the administration of the day wanted to switch from the existing silver-bearing alloy to a much cheaper metal but because silver has a much lower resistivity than any of the obvious alternatives, they were faced with the possible need to reprogramme or even replace millions of automatic vending machines.
By the mid 19th century, some one hundred years after Cronstedt's discovery, nickel had started to find widespread use as nickel-silver in which copper was alloyed with nickel and zinc to form a soft, white, easily worked alloy.
I have seen no accurate estimate of the amount of nickel which goes into coinage but it probably accounts for between a half and one per cent of total world nickel demand.

In the past couple of years 2002-2004 I have put less effort into these pages - I simply don't have the time available to do as much as I would like to do the work they require - I have a pretty large backlog of pages and coins to add to them.

Euro coins 'trigger allergy' (BAD IDEA ALERT)
They say the yellow and white alloys contain different amounts of nickel, copper and zinc, which encourage corrosion as metal ions flow from one alloy to the other when they are exposed to sweat for long periods.
The coinage breaks the EU's own rules on how much nickel is in there.
High nickel levels in some euro coins can cause red hands and painful itching, researchers warn.

 Conversion to the Euro
For more than half a century, the German mark was Europe's most powerful and stable currency.
In fact, the euro itself was originally pegged to the mark at a 1:2 exchange rate, and the banking laws that control the euro are largely inspired by postwar German monetary policies.
The symbol of the euro resembles the Greek letter epsilon, except for two horizontal parallel lines representing stability.

 FROM YOUR EDITORS
In 2002, I expect that collectors will be putting together sets of Euro currency and coinage.
So 2002 will be the magic year that 11 nations in Europe change out their currency and coinage to the “Euro” standard.
For now, the foreign coin/ currency collector has an opportunity to “zero in” on the old and existing coinage/ currency for the 11 nations.

International Migration of Coinage within the Euro-zone
For example, as 33 per cent of the coins are of German origin, 33 per cent of the coins found in each of the 12 countries should end up being German.
The designs on the other side differ between countries, making it easy to identify the country of origin of each coin.
In the long-run, each country’s coinage will gradually diffuse across the Euro-zone as coins move short distances in people’s pockets and purses and are spent.

 Watch: Euro Currency
The Euro was formed at a stability conference in June of 1997.
This time, of course, that formation likely involves the replacement of the Dollar for the Euro in world commerce.
Like Euro coinage, this had been underway for some time, but it likely agrees with the prophetic stories at the time, the first step in forming a single currency.

Well, the coinage has been going for ages, but there will be a national symbol on the obverse of the Euro coinage, so we still have some identity.
We keep going back and asking for more and are invariably disappointed.
No more difficult than the decimalisation change, in fact easier because the Euro is a decimal currency.
