Euro coins - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The fifty-cent coin is also gold in colour and is noticeably thicker, heavier, and larger than the smaller coins, and it has a coarsely serrated edge.
The Netherlands have also practically decommissioned the 1- and 2-cent coins, pressured by the retail business who claim dealing with 1- and 2-cent coins is too expensive.
In general, the greater the value, the heavier the coin; and the greater the value, the larger the coin.

Euro coins and the potential risk of nickel allergy
The comparison may be less straightforward when comparing the euros with pure-nickel coins, as the fraction of transferred nickel that dissolves before washing or rubbing hands may be different. As illustrated by fig.3, the nickel dissolution rate of the Cu75Ni25 alloy upon contact with the skin is about twice as high as that of pure nickel.
When comparing the euro data with the other copper-nickel coins, the accessible amounts of nickel and copper are found to closely reproduce the surface-averaged alloy compositions.
The data demonstrate a remarkable consistency between coins of similar composition and a close correlation with the surface- averaged proportion of the metals examined.

The euro notes look identical wherever they were printed (though aficionados can tell from the serial number where they came from).  The coins, on the other hand, have distinct national features which have made them collector's items.
"We underestimated the fun side of the coins," says a senior official who was involved in the launch of the euro.  He rues the fact that more was not made of the appeal of the variety of coins when they were launched, rather than concentrating on ensuring the coins were recognised and accepted.
Offers of euro coins are abundant in online auctions; there are websites for swapping coins and websites for tracking how quickly the coins turn up in pockets and purses in other euro countries.

New Scientist Breaking News - Euro coins' nickel release is allergy risk
Sweat acts as an electrolyte, and an electric current was established across the coin.
In fact, the coins "release 240 to 320 times more nickel than is allowed under the European Union Nickel Directive," write Frank Nestle of the University of Zurich and colleagues in the journal Nature.
But nickel was chosen partly because it can be more easily recycled than other metals used in coins.

Unlike other euro coins, the 1-euro and 2-euro pieces contain a ring of one nickel-containing alloy surrounding a center made from a different nickel alloy.
Economist Johan Verhaeven of the European Commission in Brussels, which coordinated the coins' production, says the risk of nickel allergies was discussed when the coins were designed 5 years ago.
In another experiment, the researchers submerged 1-euro and 2-euro coins in artificial sweat and found that they release more nickel than do samples of pure nickel.
