HOW THE THIRD FLOOR KNEW THE POTTERIES (1863) by Amelia B. Edwards
George Barnard was a Wesleyan — we were mostly dissenters in the Potteries — sober, clear-headed, somewhat sulky and silent, but a good fellow every inch of him, and my best friend at the time when I most needed a good friend.
Arriving at the factory-gate, I found it ajar, and so walked in and closed it after me. I remember thinking at the time that it was unlike George's usual caution to leave it so; but it passed from my mind next moment.
Going with George to chapel, as usual, in the morning, I noticed that there was something strange and anxious in his face, and that he scarcely opened his lips to me on the way.

George Sand relates in "Un Hiver a Majorque" that the first days which her party passed at the Son-Vent (House of the Wind)--this was the name of the villa they had rented--were pretty well taken up with promenading and pleasant lounging, to which the delicious climate and novel scenery invited.
George Sand, who was an experienced nurse, and whose opportunities for observing were less limited than those of the physician, had the same presentiment.

The simmering race war in southern Hungary throughout 1848-49 was hardly the best advertisement for cooperation, and Czartoryski was inclined to see Kossuth's government in particular as an oppressor of national minorities not unlike the Russian and Habsburg empires.
The Naèertanije was directly influenced by other Slav nationalists, in particular Czartoryski, who had singled out the Serbs as the only Balkan people who, because of the very existence of Serbia, might unite the Peninsula against Russian domination.
The most significant of the influences on Teleki, however, was Czartoryski's Polish circle based at the Hotel Lambert in Paris.

Depending on your point of view, George Best is either the carefree hedonist who played football for the love of it, and gleefully enjoyed the fringe benefits (booze 'n' birds) which came with the territory, or he is the sad, shambolic, wife-beating alcoholic who frittered away his God-given gifts.
Both perspectives are given a full airing in Best Intentions, an old Ulster TV documentary which has been re-released on video to coincide with Best, the recent biopic starring John Lynch as George Best.
