Penny Red - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Initially the stamp had no perforations, and had to be cut from the sheet using scissors in the same manner as for the penny black and the early printings of the Two pence blue.
Initially some of the same plates that were used to print the Penny Black were used to print the Penny Red and about 21 billion Penny Reds were printed by Messrs.
Perforations, (experimental gauge 16), first came into use in 1850 and were officially adopted in 1854, (in the same size as the experimental issue).

MORE CINDERELLAS OF THE PENNY BLACK CENTENARY
The Midwest Philatelic Society of Kansas City, Missouri, published a similar motif, combining the society’s triangular emblem with the Penny Black in a small souvenir sheet on yellow paper (Figure 3).
Certainly the artist’s caricature of Queen Victoria here was considerably less flattering than the lovely Wyon Medallion portrait after which the Penny Black stamp was modeled.
(Boris was VP of this club when I joined as a beginner over 25 years ago!) In the envelope was an old four-page thermofax checklist of over 80 different souvenir sheets issued in the U.S. for the Penny Black centenary.

Dakshina Kannada Philatelic Association - The first postage stamp Penny Black
Of the 72 million copies of Penny Black which were sold, only 16800 were from plate II, which comes to just 700 sheets.
These stamps were not perforated and had to be cut and sold.
10,000 sheets of the Penny red were printed and issued to the public a month later.

In Praise of the Penny Black
The Penny Black that crowns this article is of exceptionally fine quality, its design fresh, its details sharply defined, almost as if it were chiseled from a block of Marmora marble.
The characters identify the position of the stamp on the engraved steel grid (or plate) from which a sheet of stamps is produced.
Who says that stamp collecting doesn't have dangers, real thrills, and derring-do?

 The Penny Black
The portrait on the penny black is based on the Wyon city medal of 1837 which William Wyon modelled in 1834 when Princess Victoria was only 15.
Used examples with a light cancellation command a much higher premium on the market than heavily obliterated ones.
The Penny Black is not that rare a stamp as about 68 million were issued in 1840-41, today the price varies according to condition, since the stamps were cut by scissors, the best prices are for stamps which still have all four margins of the design intact.

Penny Black: The Post Office, Rowland Hill
She grew into a fine young woman with strong, shapely calves filling the finest of silk stockings, thighs that shaped her pencil skirt, a broad hip that could not but inspire awe, and a wasp waist that owed nothing to the manufacturers of corsets.
All anyone could determine was that the owner of the Rowland Manor Herbal Smoking Mixture factory seemed very pleased that the lad had managed to acquire the Mixture, for whenever young Albert's eyes glazed over in his beatific face, a more elemental look of satisfaction was usually observed on the face of Penny Black.
When the Post Office finally realised that the black in which the stamps were printed allowed those of a criminal disposition to remove the Maltese Cross frank quite easily, they changed it to the Penny Red by the simple expedient of using red ink.

Teal Sunglasses: Penny Black anti-spam project.
Basically, if a mail server doesn't know "you" (i.e., if your sending server isn't whiltelisted), it'll require you to do some computationally intensive operation before accepting your mail.
Do you accept the email for compatibility purposes?
This obviates the need for a server to maintain any sort of whitelist, as the black penny proposal would; the owner of the domain and the IP range manages their own space and publishes that information for you to use.

 Penny Black
The Penny Black is readily available, but because of its significance is in great demand by collectors and therefore not cheap; in 2000 a used copy cost about US$200, and an unused copy about US$3,000.
When the printings in red were made the existing plates used for some of the black stamps were used as well as new plates purely for the red printings.
In addition to the general issue of the Penny Black postage stamps, a similar stamp was produced which had the letters V and R in the top corners replacing the stars.

BBC - History - Penny Black Stamp 1840
This largely matched an increase in popular literacy.
The Reform also called for a uniform low rate of one penny per half-ounce a letter, which made letters affordable for everyone and dramatically cut the accounting costs of the Royal Mail, who until then were logging each individual letter.
The Post Office had been founded as early as 1635.

Penny Black anti-spam technical solution would stop spam virtually overnight
Every outbound e-mail is stamped with the result of the calculation, and receiving e-mail servers can verify that the email in question has been sent by a complying server.
This solution, which is called the "Penny Black" solution, has been under development at Microsoft for quite some time.
If this became reality, it would require updates to every mail server on the Internet, but it would also be a near magic bullet solution to the spam problem.

Letters from the past - a history part 5
Five months later (in January 1840), the letter would only cost one penny.
In 1840 after the introduction of the Penny Post there were 168 million and ten years later this had doubled to an incredible 347 million letters.
However, the stamps and the printed envelopes and covers were not available until the 6th May, 1840.

For this reason I have chosen to model this section after the Guide Lines To The Penny Black, by P.C. Litchfield.
The first step towards understanding the Plating of the penny Black would be to cover some general definitions, which are covered individually in the following links:
This will not be a comprehensive coverage of the book, and I recommend that the would be Plater obtain a copy as it is fortunately a relatively inexpensive book.

Great Britain: Line Engraved Victoria Made Easy by Wm F Blank
The first printing of the imperforate penny reds were made from the some of the same plates as the penny blacks.
The penny black was printed from 11 plates numbered 1 to 11, many having more than one state due to repairs and re-entries.
The term 'Penny Stars' is often used for this incomparably complex series of stamps which were in continual production from Fed. 10, 1841 until April 1862.

I suspect the postal rate was considerably more than 1 denier, though, since that was an exceptionally low denomination in the 17th century.

The First Stamp: The Penny Black - Stamps
Later issues used the same design as the Penny Black, but collectors will always be fond of an item that was, at the time, characterized by critics as "ugly."
Although we complain in modern times about a letter taking more than 2 or 3 days to go very long distances, it wasn't that long ago that standard delivery was nearly impossible.
Millions of the stamp were sold as the British eagerly embraced the idea of regular mail delivery.

 The Penny Black Project
The Penny Black project has investigated several techniques to reduce spam by making the sender pay.
Postage had to be calculated for each letter, and was typically paid by the addressee.
Before this time, postage fees were based on weight and on distance involved.

Letters from the past - a history part 1
The Penny Black, is without doubt the best-known stamp in the world, but it was only the end result of a campaign for cheap postage that had been gaining momentum for more than 100 years.
This was the result of a decree of the Council of State in 1652, to allow correspondence to and from Members of Parliament and certain State Officials to pass free through the post.
Originally, the person who sent the letter only had to write the word "FREE" or "FRANK", his name, and then to affix his identifying seal, which was often the person's family Coat of Arms, on the letter with a blob of sealing wax.

 Penny Black CD Reviews
For my money, the first track, "Come On," is the CD's best, with "Happy Everyday" and its irresistible riffage coming in a close second.
Many will say the CD is "too mellow." However, if the genre of melodic rock is to your liking, Penny Black is good stuff.
"Penny Black" is a collection of guitar-driven songs with pop-ish melodies and smooth vocals, given an extra oomph with solid bass and drum backbones.

 TeledyN: Black Penny
In another spectacular example of the shrewd cluelessness of Microsoft management and engineers, the Penny Black Anti-Spam plan is an adorably cute ploy.
Let's set that non sequiteur aside for a moment and step back a frame to deconstruct this: Who is really going to pay the penny?
Since there are about 80,000 seconds in a day, a computational "price" of just ten seconds per message would limit a spamming computer to at most 8,000 messages daily.

 History of Stamps
5/6/1840 the first two stamps were issued: 1 Penny Black and 2 Pence Blue.
Nearly 300 years later Sir Rowland Hill suggested 1835 that letters until the weight of a half english ounze (14.5 g) should be carried for a uniform fee of 1 Penny.
The first german stamp was issued 11/1/1849 in Bavaria, the black Bavarian Kreuzer:

BBC NEWS Technology Microsoft aims to make spammers pay
The development has been called the Penny Black project, because it works on the idea that revolutionised the British postage system in the 1830s - that senders of mail should have to pay for it, not whoever is on the receiving end.
Despite efforts to stem the billions of spam e-mails flooding inboxes, unwanted messages are still turning e-mail into a quagmire of misery.
Spammers send out tens of millions of e-mails to unsuspecting computer users every day, employing a myriad of methods to ensure their pills, loans and "requests for our lord" pleas fox e-mail filters.

Penny black or nasty plague? - The Spam Weblog - spam.weblogsinc.com
The Penny Black technique incurs additional memory latency (issue 1) on the senders’ system by employing an algorithm in software (or potentially hardware) that requires it to solve cryptographic puzzles before being able to send messages.
I’ll dispense with the details of why it’s called this, since it really is irrelevant, and get right to the crux of the issue.
The Penny Black project is predicated on the reality that there is an associated cost with every spam message sent and received.
