It causes that part of the stamp’s design to be printed on the reverse side of the sheet or the perforations to go off at strange angles, creating unique variations.
Most inverts are created by placing a sheet incorrectly into the printing press – as with the 24-cent Jenny Invert, where a sheet of stamps was loaded in reverse between the printing of the red frame and the blue vignette.
Foldovers happen when a part of the stamp sheet being printed, usually the corner, becomes turned.

Unlike color shifts, where the stamp designs are out of register, perforation shifts have normal printed designs which have been cut into pieces from the perforations being placed into the design, rather than between the stamps.
Imperforates are pair or blocks of stamps that are printed with one or more directions of perforations omitted.
The results are stamps that have Wild Looking Perforations way out of line with the remainder of the sheet.

Postage stamp design error - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A postage stamp design error is a mistake made during the design phase of the postage stamp production process.
A design error caught during the production process may disappear quietly, with copies of the error only getting into the public's hands via unscrupulous employees (these are therefore not considered "real" stamps).
Somewhat rarer is a design error that is first noticed by a member of the public.

The design on the five cent stamp is from a photograph of an exact size replica of an ancient Viking ship that sailed from Norway to Chicago in time for the Columbian Exposition of 1893.
So faithful were the engravers to the photograph from which the stamp's design was made, that a flag of the United States is seen waving from the bow of the ship!
They were printed in two colors, which in essence nearly doubled the time needed to print them, and they were printed in sheets of 100 stamps (10 x 10), rather than in sheets of 200 or even 400, again a more time intensive method of production.

It encompasses everything from major design errors to stamps that are just poorly printed, and includes both some of the most sought-after and expensive of all stamps, and others that attract the attention of only a few specialists.
Mistakes smuggled out by unscrupulous employees are called printer's waste, not recognized as legitimate stamps, and may be confiscated from collectors; the Nixon invert is a well-known recent example of an apparent new error that turned out to be simple theft by insiders.
Postal authorities generally take some care to ensure that mistakes don't get out of the printing plant; to be valid, the EFO stamps must have been sold to a customer.

Revenue stamps pay tax instead of postage
Because the manufacturer controlled the design of the stamps, they often were miniature advertisements for the product.
In such cases, a quick look at the stamp in question often reveals that there should be no expectation of finding it in the Scott catalog, because it is a revenue stamp, not a postage stamp.
Collecting revenue stamps still attached to the original document is the revenue equivalent of collecting postage stamps on cover.
